LONDON — Chelsea Football Club have confirmed that men’s team captain Reece James has successfully undergone a planned, minor surgical procedure on his right knee on Friday morning in London.

The 26-year-old England international defender had reported persistent localized discomfort following high-intensity training sessions at the club’s Cobham headquarters earlier this week. After consultation with an independent orthopedic knee specialist and Chelsea’s lead medical director, all parties agreed that a targeted arthroscopic procedure was the safest long-term solution to relieve joint inflammation and restore structural stability.

In an official medical bulletin released on Friday, Chelsea confirmed the surgery proceeded without complication. The club stated: "Reece James has undergone a successful minor surgical procedure on his knee. Reece will immediately begin his rehabilitation program under the direct supervision of the club’s medical team at Cobham. Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a swift and comprehensive recovery."

During his pre-match press conference ahead of the weekend’s Premier League commitments, head coach Enzo Maresca addressed the situation with clarity, emphasizing the distinction between confirmed medical facts and external media speculation.

"Reece had a minor clean-up procedure this morning which went very well," Maresca stated. "Our primary focus is ensuring he returns 100% stable, pain-free, and confident. We have a clear, scientific plan in place with our medical department. We will not set arbitrary public deadlines. Reece remains our captain and a vital dressing-room leader, and we are completely behind him throughout every step of his rehab."

While several UK national newspapers and sports tabloids initially suggested a recovery timeline of four to six weeks, Chelsea’s internal medical staff have emphasized that the player will be evaluated on a milestone-based criterion rather than a calendar countdown. Confirmed facts establish that the procedure was strictly arthroscopic and minor—not involving any major ligament tears or tendon reconstructions.

James, who has captained the Blues since August 2023, has maintained an elite level of defensive output and creative delivery whenever available. In his absence, vice-captain Enzo Fernández and senior defenders Axel Disasi and Malo Gusto will step forward to absorb defensive and on-pitch leadership responsibilities.

Chelsea’s upcoming fixture schedule features crucial Premier League clashes and domestic cup encounters. The club have scheduled James’s initial physical therapy check-in for Monday, where an updated mobility assessment will be conducted by club medical specialists.
