AL AIN, UAE — In one of the most eagerly anticipated individual comebacks in modern football history, Neymar stepped onto the pitch on Monday evening after 369 grueling days of rehabilitation following a catastrophic knee injury, helping Al Hilal to a chaotic 5–4 victory over Al Ain at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.

The 32-year-old Brazilian international had not played competitive football since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus during a World Cup qualifier for Brazil against Uruguay on October 17, 2023.

The landmark moment arrived in the 77th minute. With Al Hilal leading 5–3, manager Jorge Jesus signaled to the touchline. The fourth official raised the electronic board displaying number 10, sparking rapturous applause across the stadium.

Neymar immediately showcased his trademark audacity, exchanging sharp one-twos with Sergej Milinković-Savić and testing Al Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa with a venomous low drive that narrowly zipped past the upright.

The match itself was an astonishing spectacle of attacking football. Renan Lodi opened the scoring for Al Hilal with a laser-guided strike, before Asian Footballer of the Year Salem Al-Dawsari stole the headline show with a magnificent hat-trick (45', 65', 75'). Al Ain striker Soufiane Rahimi responded in kind, scoring a hat-trick of his own including an 86th-minute penalty.

Despite Al Hilal defender Ali Al-Bulaihi receiving a straight red card in the 82nd minute for deliberate handball, the Saudi champions withstood 14 minutes of stoppage-time pressure to maintain their 100% record in the AFC Champions League Elite.

"I feel so happy to be back," Neymar said in an emotional post-match interview with tears in his eyes. "It was the most difficult year of my life. There were moments of immense pain and doubt, but with the support of my family, the doctors, and my teammates, I am whole again."

Jorge Jesus praised his superstar’s mental fortitude: "Neymar’s return is a gift to global football. We will manage his workload scientifically, but having his vision and technical mastery back changes our dimension entirely."
