MADRID — LOSC Lille have officially become the conquerors of Madrid. After defeating reigning European champions Real Madrid 1–0 on Matchday 2, the Ligue 1 outfit traveled to the Metropolitano on Wednesday and engineered an unforgettable 3–1 comeback win over Atlético Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side appeared in cruise control when Julián Álvarez capitalized on an errant backpass from Ousmane Touré to lift a clever finish past Lucas Chevalier after just eight minutes.

Atlético squandered numerous opportunities to extend their advantage, with Alexander Sørloth missing three clear-cut chances before half-time—a profligacy that proved fatal.

On 61 minutes, Edon Zhegrova silenced the Madrid crowd with a curling effort from the edge of the area that took a nick off José María Giménez and sailed into the far corner.

Controversy followed in the 74th minute when referee Marco Guida awarded Lille a contentious penalty for an apparent handball against Koke. Canadian marksman Jonathan David stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick with ice in his veins.

David struck again in the 89th minute, his deflected shot looping over Jan Oblak to seal a historic triumph that leaves Atlético with two defeats from three matches.

"Beating both Madrid giants in the space of three weeks is something that will be remembered in Lille history forever," Bruno Génésio beamed. "We played with bravery and took our moments."
