ROME — In a showcase of Italian tactical grit and defensive resilience, reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan secured a priceless 1–0 victory over AS Roma on Sunday night at the Stadio Olimpico, powered by a decisive second-half strike from captain Lautaro Martínez.
Simone Inzaghi’s side were forced to overcome immense early adversity. Inside the opening 27 minutes, the Nerazzurri lost key midfield orchestrator Hakan Çalhanoğlu to a thigh strain, followed shortly by defensive cornerstone Francesco Acerbi pulling up with a hamstring twinge.
Despite the disruption, Inter maintained their defensive discipline, with veteran Yann Sommer denying Lorenzo Pellegrini and Paulo Dybala with sharp reaction stops.
The decisive moment arrived on the hour mark. Following an errant pass across midfield by Roma defender Zeki Çelik, Davide Frattesi spearheaded an incisive counter-attack down the right channel. Frattesi centered for Lautaro Martínez, who took one touch to evade Gianluca Mancini before thrashing a ferocious drive into the roof of Mile Svilar’s net.
The goal was Martínez’s 133rd in all competitions for Inter, equaling legendary Hungarian forward István Nyers as the highest-scoring foreign player in the club’s illustrious 116-year history.
Roma mounted a frantic late siege, with substitute Matías Soulé stinging Sommer’s palms in stoppage time, but Inter held firm to claim their third consecutive Serie A victory.
"Winning in Rome after losing two crucial players in the first half hour demonstrates the immense spirit of this squad," Inzaghi said after the contest. "Lautaro is our leader and captain. When the match demands a clinical edge, he delivers."
The victory elevates Inter Milan into second place in Serie A on 17 points, just two points adrift of Antonio Conte’s league-leading Napoli.
