BIRMINGHAM — Forty-two years after lifting the European Cup in Rotterdam, Aston Villa are the toast of European football once again, standing alone at the pinnacle of the 36-club Champions League table following an emphatic 2–0 triumph over Bologna at a thunderous Villa Park.
Unai Emery’s side have accomplished what few thought possible: three consecutive European victories, six goals scored, zero goals conceded, and maximum nine points in the bank.
Following triumphs over Young Boys in Bern (3–0) and Bayern Munich at Villa Park (1–0), the Villans dismantled Vincenzo Italiano’s Italian side with tactical patience and second-half ruthlessness.
Captain John McGinn opened the scoring in the 55th minute, whipping in a wickedly curling free-kick that evaded everyone inside the six-yard box and deceived Bologna goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski.
Nine minutes later, Colombia international sensation Jhon Durán struck again. Meeting Morgan Rogers’ exquisite cross on the slide, Durán guided a brilliant side-footed volley into the bottom corner before receiving a roaring standing ovation from Prince William and 42,000 delirious supporters.
"We are playing with extraordinary discipline and mature tactical personality," Emery stated. "To be on nine points and top of the Champions League table after three matchdays is special for our supporters, but we must keep our feet firmly on the ground. Knockout qualification is within reach, but our ambition is to finish inside the top eight."
Villa now prepare for a crunch Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Saturday, full of swagger and continental pride.
